Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
