An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made cars.

The minister said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
